Understanding psychologist titles× All CPSA psychologists follow professional, ethical, and evidence-based standards. The titles mainly describe training, endorsement, and registration stage—not who you will connect with best. Clinical psychologistA registered psychologist with additional postgraduate clinical training and clinical endorsement. They can be especially helpful for complex mental health concerns and formal assessment, and eligible Mental Health Care Plan sessions may receive a higher Medicare rebate. Registered psychologistA fully registered psychologist trained to assess and provide evidence-based therapy across a broad range of concerns. They are often a strong all-round choice and eligible Mental Health Care Plan sessions can receive a Medicare rebate. Provisional psychologistA psychologist completing the supervised pathway to general registration with regular professional supervision. They can be a strong choice for accessible, ongoing support: weekday sessions are $120, no referral is needed, and privately funded sessions are not limited by Medicare’s annual session cap. Medicare does not provide rebates for provisional psychologist sessions. There is no single “best” title. Your needs, preferred approach, availability, and how comfortable you feel with the clinician all matter. We can help you weigh those factors. Emily Smith Registered Psychologist Add to preferred clinicians Emily works with children, adolescents, and young adults and is experienced in supporting anxiety, ADHD, autism, trauma, grief, and emotional regulation difficulties.
